Building Our Future
In 2012, New Jersey’s 59 colleges and universities identified over $6 billion of critical academic facility and infrastructure needs. Responding to a call for support, the Legislature approved a referendum for the November ballot seeking public approval for $750 million in borrowing to fund these desperately needed projects. The Building Our Future Bond Act was the largest referendum in state history and was the first for higher education since 1988.
Kivvit took the lead on this initiative and developed a comprehensive campaign plan to build a broad-based coalition, raise necessary resources, educate the public on the issue, and organize supporters to take action on
Team Kivvit built the largest and most diverse stakeholder coalition in New Jersey’s history. In the end, over 225 stakeholders from across the state were recruited. The coalition was only one facet of the overall campaign plan, which included traditional campaign tactics, digital media, radio, direct mail, earned media, and cable television.
As a result of all these coordinated efforts, the Building Our Future Bond Act passed overwhelmingly on Election Day, with total support of 62.8% statewide.
